Meet our Rector....
Many of my friends say to me, "Deborah, how do you get so much done in a day?" I agree with them. I often wonder how I accomplish so much in my life. Upon reflection, God has blessed me with many gifts: I play the viola professionally, teach music, paint ceramics, play tennis, practice yoga and martial arts, cook, and care for house plants, just to name a few things. When I do put too much on my plate, relaxing by watching bad reality television with a bag of popcorn makes everything better. Several episodes of Judge Judy, and I am okay. I also believe my ability to laugh at myself, and my dry sense of humor topped with my Southern girl accent and sayings get me through the day.
I believe bacon is a separate and important food group. Our cat Thelma is trained to wake us up every day at 5:30 a.m. even on the weekends. I guess Thelma can do what she wants at the age of 22! I look forward to being awed at art and jewelry exhibits, and crying and laughing at the Portland Opera.
I enjoy being an entrepreneur, and creating new things. I enjoy spontaneity and at any given moment might pack a bag and head to Cannon Beach or I might decide to take a nap on the couch.
I grew up in Charlotte, NC where I was taught to say, "Yes ma'am, and no sir." Imagine my surprise when I moved to Portland and was told by several people not to call them "ma'am" or "sir". I miss eating Southern food, but as I have gotten older, I realize that continuous eating of some Southern cuisine can kill you. I was a cadet in the Girl Scouts, and my mother was a scout leader. I even took ballet and tap dance lessons from Miss Donna's Dance School. I think my mother still has some of my dance trophies. She wanted me to be a debutante but I was too much of a tom boy where I played football, basketball, and rode a skateboard. I am not the "girly girl" type.
I have my motorcycle endorsement. For a short while I rode an 883 Harley Davidson Sportster. I don't ride anymore. I thought about getting another motorcycle but I changed my mind, and ride a bicycle without a motor.
Some of my favorite actors and actresses are Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Lawrence Fishburne, Robert DeNiro, Viola Davis, Cicely Tyson, Meryl Streep, and Oprah Winfrey, and Margaret Hamilton.
Some of my favorite movies are Shawshank Redemption, The Wizard of Oz, and GoodFellas.
During my summer breaks from teaching middle school and high school orchestra in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public School System in Charlotte, NC, I took short term missionary trips to Nairobi, Kenya (twice), Guatemala, Hong Kong, and Nova Scotia. I hope to go on more trips in the future, especially to Kenya.
My fiancée Pam and I are "foodies" meaning we enjoy trying new cuisines. I rarely follow recipes when I cook, and I think of myself as a good outdoor griller. Pam and I also enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, working in the garden and yard, and shopping for shoes.
