Sermon: Epiphany 3, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
Today’s gospel lesson follows from last weeks and we see Jesus continuing to call more of his disciples.
Jesus calls Simon and his brother Andrew and then says to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.”
What you and I see in any time of history depends very much on the lens through which we choose to look. You and I have been given a lens. It is the lens—or better yet we may call this a story—a story that we know as our Christian faith. This faith story is one which Christians place upon the reality that they experience.
The Christian story offers us two great insights. It tells us that God is our creator and according to Christian tradition, that Christ is arisen. The theologian Jorgen Moltmann points out that creation is not something that happened once, but is far more than a past event. What Moltmann says is that there is our memory of creation as in the past, our present experience of creation and our hope of on-going creation.

Sermon: Epiphany 1, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
Last Friday was celebrated as the Feast of the Epiphany. Let’s suppose for a moment that the Epiphany never happened.
That’s not such a far-fetched idea after all, because many New Testament scholars have said that the story of the visit of the magi was a construct by Matthew, an addition to his gospel. It’s purpose was to introduce the themes of the Gospel as being a reflection of Jewish salvation history—by saying that Judaism had consequences for everyone in the world. This gospel message of consequences for everyone in the world is represented by these visitors to the manger who were from the orient.
Each of us might find that a compelling view—just an addition to one of the gospels. But let’s suppose that Matthew never included this story in his gospel—that actually the story fell out of an ancient papyrus that was thrown into the fire by a hermit in the Sinai peninsula on a very cold night, but that hermit accidentally had included it in the Matthew text. Let’s suppose that the visit of the Magi never happened.
