Readings for the Second Sunday after Pentecost: June 26th, 2011
Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Mission Possible! Our youth will be spending the week of June 26-July 1 doing service projects around the metro area. We need YOUR help by transporting the youth to different service projects. If you have a free day during that week, please contact Risa at risa@stjohnsmilwaukie.org. Another way to help is to volunteer to cook an evening meal. Come spend some time with our wonderful youth and join us in serving our community. Without the extra help, we may have to turn away some youth who wish to join us in this week long project.
Empties4Cash: Did you know? St. John’s participates in the Empties4Cash program. We collect used inkjet cartridges, ship them back when we have a full box, and get a check in return. Some people drop them off in the church office, where we maintain a box for that, but we now have another option: Prepaid mailing envelopes so you can drop them in the mail directly.
If you’re interested in recycling your used cartridges in this way, contact me by responding to this email and I will arrange to get the envelopes to you.-Sue

Sermon: Trinity Sunday, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
Most of you know that I try every year to avoid preaching on Trinity Sunday. I’ve invited Bishop Ladehoff at times; I’ve invited different clergy—mostly because the Trinity—for me—represents a doctrinal formula—a mathematical formula, that is difficult to understand at best.
The doctrine of the Trinity was created to describe, define and safe-guard an experience—the experience of the early church as they sought to preserve the words and actions and thoughts of Jesus.
If we go back to that story of Jesus we know that Jesus attracted a mixed group of people who followed him and hung on every word. He told stories that related their lives to him, to God and to each other. They experienced a new love and a new creative imagination about who they were and how they were valued.

Readings for Trinity Sunday: June 19th, 2011
Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Sermon: Pentecost, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
Some years ago, a wise priest that I know was asked a question by a child: “Where does the sky begin?”
Without a hesitation the response was “The sky begins in your lungs.”
Of course, he meant that the air we breathe is part of the atmosphere, which is part of—and included in—what we call “the sky”.
This answer to the child’s question is a good response on this Sunday when we celebrate Pentecost…the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples.
Where can we begin to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit in our own lives?
I think that we can say that the work of the Holy Spirit also begins in our lungs—just like the sky.

Sermon: Easter 7, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. It is the time that we look back and recollect the many individuals who have died in wars across the history of this country. And we pray, not only for them, but for their families and our nation.
It is the right time to pray for our nation and for ourselves, because our newspapers and television headlines scream out to us about a time when the power and witness of this country appears to be mixed up with competing concerns of largess and many personal political agendas.
Let me begin with a word about life—perhaps a strange place to begin, but I hope you will agree with me that this is an appropriate place to begin. Life is not a preparation for anything—it is not a testing station for something that will happen in the future. Life, as we live it, is learning to live here and now, in freedom from fear, in open hope and love with a faith that calls us to freedom. Life is not meant to be merely survival. And life, for Christians, is to follow God as we understand who and what God is as well as what God might have in mind for this world and for you and me.
