Sermon: Epiphany 2, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston

The portion of scripture just read as the gospel contains a story of a miraculous sign followed by a human response.  It’s from John and the story is about the testimony that John the Baptist makes regarding the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River along with the recognition of the identity of Jesus.  This bit of the gospel is then followed by the story of Jesus calling Andrew and Simon Peter to become disciples.  And the wording here from Jesus is “come and see”.

We’re not told why the disciples followed Jesus, but this opportunity to respond to God was clearly the message—“Come and see.”

During the centuries since that time, the dominant theme in the Church has always been one of mission—to invite others to ‘come and see’—to share the gospel.  And we have known this invitation as the mission of evangelism.  I know this, and you know this, but nothing makes most of us more uncomfortable than to talk about evangelism.  If you want to insult an Episcopal priest, call him or her an evangelist.  Or if we wish to see a member of any congregation—including this one—turn glassy-eyed and seek the nearest exit—bring up the idea of evangelism at the parish annual meeting.

Be sure to join us for a wonderful breakfast brought to you by our own St. Martha's Guild. We will look at 2010 in review, as well as examine this year's budget. We will also be voting on vestry members. Please plan to attend this meeting. Your participation makes us all the stronger!

Vestry Positions:
We have concluded the search for new vestry members and will vote on the slate at the annual meeting. To all who volunteered or who merely thought/prayed about it, we appreciate your consideration. Thank you all!  Note from Sue: When the newsletter went to press, we had only three candidates; since then others have volunteered.  All bios I receive in a timely manner will be published in the annual meeting booklet.

Parish Hall User Group Meeting #1:
Saturday, January 29th, at 10:00 we will conduct our first "user group" meeting as we move forward in the master plan and consider what to do about the parish hall. It is open to all who use the parish hall and/or all who have a vision of what you would like to see  as the future of this space. It is only a preliminary meeting, but we would love to hear from you. Come and join the dialogue, bring your vision and suggestions. We are NOT planning on tearing it apart tomorrow, but need to hear from you as we move along in the process!

Sermon: Christmas Eve, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston

Tonight we gather here together to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  This is an evening when the church throughout the world holds up a vision of the magnificence of God in the act of becoming human—like you and me—by the birth of a simple, vulnerable, baby child who comes to be known as Emmanuel—God with us.

This story culminates in the collect we just prayed a few moments ago:  O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light:  Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven…”

So we pray this night for a world in which the mystery of God is made known throughout the universe, where peace and justice reign, where love and compassion and the spirit of good will may be extended to everyone and everything in all creation.

It’s an extraordinary theme.  And for those of us who are tempted to despair about the world, and the conditions of human life in which so many live, this theme of God becoming human is meant to be for us a vision of hope, a word of strength, making us confident in our faith and constant in our witness for Jesus Christ.  It is also a vision of harmony and peace.
