Lector Training Scheduled for August 6th. Please consider this your official invitation to attend Lector training at St John’s. Whether you are new to being a lector or have been a lector for decades, the meeting should be of benefit to you and the parish. The workshop will be on Saturday, August 6th, 10:00 am to noon. We will review basics such as where to look for pronunciation help, how to approach the lectern, how to prepare to present your reading and procedure to follow if you will be unable to lector on an assigned Sunday. We will also talk about lectoring as a spiritual practice and discuss different approaches to the prayers of the people. Each participant will be given an opportunity to practice presentation techniques. For questions, please contact Deacon Stephen Denny, at dcndenny@aol.com
SCRIP... The next date for ordering scrip will be August 14th.
Summer Fun for Children is on recess for the remainder of the summer. Watch for Church School to return in the fall.

Coming Up:
Service at the Pioneer Church: Once upon a time, the pioneer church that now graces the Sellwood area was located where our Parish Hall is now. In fact it was the original St. John's! Once a year we celebrate this history and our connection to that lovely church by having our 10:00 service in the old church. Mark your calendars for September 4th, and plan on joining us that morning. In addition, there will be a picnic at Oaks Park following the service, so bring your family and friends for a day of worship and fun in the park!
Bricks for Haiti: The Oregon Diocese beginning a fundraising effort to help rebuild the Episcopal church in Haiti. There will be more information coming to you soon!
We will celebrate GRANDPARENT'S DAY on Sunday, September 11th. If you would like to have invitations sent to your grandchildren, great grandchildren, or grandparents, please send names and addresses to Deacon Pat atpatmorrisrader@gmail.com or leave completed form in church office.
Race for the Cure Please join the St. John’s team on Sunday, September 18th for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. This is a fund raiser for breast cancer research and to provide funds for mammograms for women that can’t afford it. The St. John’s team will be participating in the 5k walk (more like a stroll!)
Our team is registered as Church Ladies & Choir Boys. Please sign up online at racecure@komenoregon.org before the deadline of August 29th. Sharon Fontaine is the team captain and can be contacted for information or questions.
SAVE THE DATE! The 6th annual wine tour is scheduled for Saturday, September 24th. We will be traveling from St. John’s by bus and visiting three or four wineries. Proceeds from the wine tour will be given to the Children’s Clothing Center, Feed the Hungry program, Youth Group and Sunday School. Please stay tuned for more information. Please reserve your seat early by calling Sharon or Bruce Fontaine at 503-654-8529. There will also be a sign up sheet available in the narthex.
CoEd Cursillo 2011 will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Coos Bay on October 6 through October 9th. This is a change from the former planned location of St. Matthews Eugene.
We are extremely grateful for the invitation to use Coos Bay for our 3 day weekend and hope to schedule a 4th Day event at St. Matthews later. (St. Matthews Eugene is having a HUGE Auction that same weekend and invites everyone to come and enjoy it too) Praise God!

Portland Chamber Music is looking for a few new musicians for our 2011-2012 performance calendar. If you are, or know someone who might be, interested in playing with us, please pass along this note to them. All of our performances pay, and we do quite a bit of exciting programming. Below is a copy of our ad.
We are holding auditions for any and all musicians. Portland Chamber Music is an ensemble that performs regularly in the Portland area using adventurous programming and taking quality music to places it may not normally be. PCM musicians must be able to read music, rehearse on a regular basis, and confirm their availability for our performance calendar. Please send us a resume and head shot to schedule an audition time. We are looking for: flute, clarinet, saxophone, drums, percussion, trumpet, trombone, low brass, guitar, banjo, and are willing to consider other instruments, so schedule an audition.
