Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift that your faithful people offer you true and laudable service: Grant that we may run without stumbling to obtain your heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Sermon: Pentecost 22, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
Today’s gospel lesson from Luke is one that we are all familiar with. It concerns two men—a Pharisee and a tax collector who go to the Temple to pray. They pray in vastly different ways--much like we do. The Pharisee thanks God for his righteousness. And he sees himself completely unlike the tax collector who the Pharisee recognizes as unrighteous. The tax collector, on the other hand, prays while recognizing his sinful condition and calls on God’s mercy. At the end of this story Jesus says: “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
The Pharisee, who lives an orderly, regulated, exemplary moral life, offers a prayer filled with self-righteousness. The Publican—the tax collector—hangs his head down and begs for the forgiveness of God. Jesus draws the conclusion in this gospel that the tax collector was “justified” in the eyes of God and the Pharisee was not.

Sermon: Pentecost 21, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
Today begins our Stewardship canvass—the time when we ask each of you to pledge money to support the work of St. John’s for the coming year. Next Saturday night we will participate in our annual Harvest Dinner—a time to be together as a parish community and to begin to understand the needs of St. John’s for 2011.
Over the years a number of my clergy colleagues have counted the number of years to retirement by the number of stewardship sermons that they had to preach. Having said that, I want you to know how important and how committed I am to our life of faith together and I never regret talking about how critical our financial gifts are to maintain the vital and exciting ministry that we do together at St. John’s. A long time ago I stopped apologizing for asking for money, because I believe strongly and have a passion for what the church means to me. And I know that St. John’s means that to you as well.

Adult Education, Sunday Mornings at 9:00 am
On Sunday morning, Deacon Denny will continue his class on Finding the Holy in Daily Life for another two weeks. This class examines taking the religious life beyond the church walls and into the world. If you are tired of talking about religion, reading about spirituality and talking about things that matter without acting on them--then this class is for you.
On the 31st of October, we will have a report on the workings of the Diocesan Convention--resolutions, elections for various diocesan committees and the address of our new Bishop, Michael Hanley.
In Advent (beginning on the 28th of November) Bud Thurston will do an Advent study on the Gospel of John. Bring a Bible and learn and discuss this important Gospel writer in the life of the church.

Sermon: Pentecost 19, The Very Rev. Anthony Thurston
The gospels were written for the early Christians. And they were written primarily to encourage those early followers of Jesus in their Christian lives. Today’s words from Luke are no exception. We see Jesus’ followers saying “Please give us more faith—we don’t have enough—we can’t do anything as we are. We’re weak and you are so holy and we want to be like you.”
This idea of receiving more faith is worth exploring this morning.
As we grow up our minds develop in many different ways. Our experiences and our insight into people—their ideas and their problems—grows deeper. At the same time, unless we have allowed ourselves to become bogged down by some rigidity in our religious thinking, or if for some reason—maybe the reason of neglect—we’re not taught anything about God—then there comes a time in our lives when our idea of God grows like our ideas about ourselves and others.
And out of this time comes an awe-struck humility that who we once worshiped as God is really only a small part of God’s vast purpose and presence. As a matter of fact, the vastness of God is beyond any human comprehension at all.

Readings for the 19th Sunday after Pentecost: October 3rd, 2010
Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
